Why is the Costa Blanca worth visiting?

What is the Costa Blanca?

The Costa Blanca is the tourist name given to the coastline of the province of Alicante, located in south-eastern Spain. It stretches for around 244 kilometres along the Mediterranean coast.

It begins in the municipality of Dénia, bordering the Costa de Valencia, and ends in Pilar de la Horadada, just before entering the Region of Murcia (where the Costa Cálida begins).

It is usually divided into two sectors due to its geography: Costa Blanca North (from Dénia to Alicante) and Costa Blanca South (from Alicante to Pilar de la Horadada).

7 tips for your holiday on the Costa Blanca in Spain

• Best time to go: If possible, avoid July and August. May, June and September are ideal months: the water is already warm (or still warm), prices are lower and there are no crowds.
• Hire a car: Although there is a train (the TRAM) connecting Alicante with Denia, which is lovely, you will need a car to reach the best coves in Jávea or inland villages such as Guadalest.
• Airport: Alicante-Elche Airport (ALC) is the main gateway and has excellent connections throughout Europe.
• Bring water shoes: Many of the most beautiful coves in the north are rocky or gravelly. Your feet will thank you when getting in and out of the water.
• Book at beach bars: If you want to eat by the sea at a popular spot, book at least a couple of days in advance.
• Look for daily set menus: In inland villages (such as Jalón or Polop), you can find incredible traditional set menus at very reasonable prices (€15-20).
• It's not all about the beach: Go for a walk. The Costa Blanca has incredible hiking trails: the Peñón de Ifach in Calpe, the Barranc de l'Infern or the Sierra de Bernia offer spectacular views and a connection with nature.
