What weather to expect on the Costa del Sol all year round
Before planning your stay, the best time to visit the Costa del Sol depends on both your heat tolerance and your preferences in terms of tourist activities. Thanks to its Mediterranean climate, the Costa del Sol enjoys a pleasant climate and favorable weather all year round, although the period from May to October is considered the most ideal if you intend to enjoy the sun and heat of the summer season. We’re going to take a look at the different climates you can expect to find in this region of southern Spain, by season, and tell you all about what you can do.
Springtime
From March to May, spring on the Costa del Sol is mild and sunny, with occasional rainy days. It’s the ideal season for enjoying mild days, especially until May, when the first warm days start to appear, with highs of up to 30 degrees. What’s more, if you like sightseeing and outdoor activities that require some physical effort, such as hiking, this is the ideal time to visit southern Andalusia, especially if you’re heading further inland.
Summertime
Summer, from June to mid-September, is the ideal season if you’re planning a beach holiday on the Costa del Sol; the sunshine is perfect and constant, the skies could not be clearer and the rain almost non-existent. Temperatures generally oscillate between 28 degrees in June and 30/31 degrees in July and August, typical of the Mediterranean climate. However, when the hot winds from inland Andalusia reach the coast, the heat can become torrid, with temperatures sometimes reaching 35/37 degrees, or even 40°C. Fortunately, in this case, the wind is strong and the air becomes dry: it’s best to drink often to avoid dehydration, especially for the elderly and children.
Apart from this aspect, summer on the Costa del Sol is synonymous with high tourist season; during these months, the region is abuzz with a wealth of activities and events. It’s the ideal time for those who love the tourist buzz and want to enjoy all the attractions, from lively restaurants to colorful festivals. Conversely, this is also the season when crowds are greatest and accommodation prices soar, so we recommend booking your accommodation in advance for greater comfort.
Autumn
Autumn occurs on the Costa del Sol from mid-September to November, when temperatures start out warm and gradually become milder, reaching 20°C in places, as Atlantic disturbances become more frequent along the coast. In October, there are still many warm, sunny days, especially in the first half. In November, however, the weather changes and becomes mild, often cloudy and rainy. Occasionally, the rains are concentrated over a short period and can be heavy, especially in the western part of the Costa del Sol. Ideal weather for indoor cultural visits, such as to museums.
Winter
From December to February, winter is mild, with sunny days alternating with periods of bad weather, wind and rain.
Occasionally, temperatures reach 18/20 degrees due to the African wind, which can even push the thermometer over 20 degrees. During this season, it’s rarely very cold: the temperature only drops to zero on the coldest nights, but even then, it’s usually over ten degrees during the day, which means it never snows in this region.
